EuroHPC family welcomes another member: the Bulgarian supercomputer was inaugurated

Discoverer, the Bulgarian supercomputer purchased under the aegis of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking was inaugurated on 21 October 2021 in Sofia Tech Park, Sofia. Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel also attended the event.

Discoverer is built upon a BullSequana XH2000 infrastructure delivered by Atos. The supercomputer has a performance of 4.5 petaflops mostly serving the users of the Balkan region in addition to Bulgarian and European users. With this performance, Discoverer was ranked No.91 on the TOP500 list.

Since both the EuroHPC and the Bulgarian government participated in the funding of the project, they will jointly decide on the access methodology in accordance with their financial contribution. 35% and 65% of the resources will be used by the EuroHPC and Bulgaria, respectively.

So far, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has installed two supercomputers: Vega in Slovenia and MeluXina in Luxembourg, and the purchase of the Czech Karolina and Portuguese Deucalion has also been finalised. These petascale infrastructures will be complete with larger, pre-exascale systems, which will be installed in Finland, Italy, and Spain.
